2026 · Window Manager

Godland

This is a fork of the Godot game engine modified to work as a desktop environment. Client windows on the desktop are spawned as Godot scenes, and their behavior is governed fully by GDscript. These two demo videos are just examples of what could be done with this.

The 2D desktop is a prototype of what I eventually want to use as my daily driver. I experimented with other window managers like hyprland and i3, but I felt like they gave me limited control. My goal with this project was to have an easy way to try out radically different desktop layouts, and customize my desktop completely.

This is my first real foray into "vibe coding"; Almost all of the backend code was generated with coding agents. It still took me months of testing and iteration, since LLMs are not great at writing code that has to do with hardware, like window compositing. Also as a result, I think the codebase is pretty bloated and probably over-engineered. But, this gives me a starting point to go from if I want to hand-build this, and figuring out how to connect wlroots to Godot would have probably taken me months longer if I had built it without AI assistance. As it stands, I now have access to a tool that's far more user-friendly than the bare C++ window managers are usually built on, so I'm satisfied.
